About

🐦 Log 100 species

Join the Southern Africa Big Year 2024 and experience the rich avian biodiversity of Southern Africa. Your goal? Identify and log 100 bird species to complete the challenge. But don't stop there! Keep exploring and recording to see how high you can climb on the leaderboard, comparing your achievements with fellow birders across this diverse and bird-rich region.

Countries include Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini & Mozambique (South of the Zambezi river).

This challenge is for anyone with a Birda account. This challenge is for tickable species only. You can read more about tickable species here.

This challenge starts and ends based on the SAST time zone. All individual species logged within the Southern African region will count towards this challenge and will be included in any leaderboard placement. All sightings must be logged before midnight on the day the challenge ends.

The challenge boundary includes Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique (South of the Zambezi river) as well as each countries exclusive economic zone which extends 200 nautical miles from the coast. The Prince Edward Islands and their exclusive economic zone are not included.

Be honest with yourself and other birders, but above all, respectful of them and any other outdoor users, everywhere – especially online. If you didn’t see it (or hear it), please don’t put it on Birda.

December Challenge 2024

01 - 31 Dec, 2024
🐦 Log 30 species πŸ“ Anywhere It's the last month of the year and the December Challenge is the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and add those last ticks to your list. This month's bird is the Canada Goose, known for its iconic V-shaped flight formation, which helps conserve energy during long migrations of up to 3,000 miles. They mate for life, with strong pair bonds, and both parents actively protect and care for their young. Canada geese are herbivores, feeding on grasses, grains, and aquatic vegetation, but they have been known to scavenge in urban areas. Remarkably, their honking calls are not just noiseβ€”they serve as a form of communication, helping the flock coordinate in flight.

Clean and easy to use
Really enjoying this app, it's clean and easy to use. I love the ease of being able to add those one-off birds without starting a whole checklist. I also like the social aspect, like the parts of my Facebook I like, without the ads and junk, just birds. Can't wait to see it become more populated.
