About

🐦 Log 75 species

Join the South African Big Year 2024, enhance your birdwatching skills, and contribute to wildlife research across the country's diverse landscapes. Explore the rich variety of bird species found throughout South Africa's parks and natural reserves. Set your goal to identify and record 75 different bird species by the end of the year and see if you can spot the 2024 Bird of the Year - the beautiful Bateluer!

This challenge is for anyone with a Birda account. This challenge is for tickable species only. You can read more about tickable species here.

This challenge starts and ends based on the SAST time zone. All individual species logged in South Africa (Inc islands & EEZ) will count towards this challenge and will be included in any leaderboard placement. All sightings must be logged before midnight on the day the challenge ends.

The challage boundary includes South Africa, the Prince Edward Islands as well as South Africa's exclusive economic zone which extends 200 nautical miles from the coast.

Be honest with yourself and other birders, but above all, respectful of them and any other outdoor users, everywhere – especially online. If you didn’t see it (or hear it), please don’t put it on Birda.

November Challenge 2024

01 - 30 Nov, 2024
🐦 Log 30 species πŸ“ Anywhere This November, embrace the changing season and challenge yourself to log 30 bird species. From crisp morning outings to peaceful afternoon strolls, each bird adds to your growing list. With migration in full swing, who knows what feathered travelers you’ll encounter? The race to 30 species is on! This month's bird is the Bearded Reedling, also known as the Bearded Tit, is a small, round bird with striking features and some unique habits! Found mainly in the reed beds of Europe and Asia, this bird has a distinctive β€œmoustache” rather than a beard, which only the males sport. Bearded Reedlings are incredibly flexible; in summer, they eat insects, but in winter, they opt for a diet of seed. They’re also pretty acrobatic, often seen hanging upside down from reeds as they forage!

Makes you want to spot birds more
I think this app is fun. It makes you want to spot birds more so I guess in a way it encourages you to get out and about instead of sitting in front of the TV.

Great app for beginner twitchers
I’ve had a passion of photographing birds for a long time now but have only just gotten into proper birdwatching, and this app is brilliant for those just getting started. There is a great sense of community among users and the app is very easy to use and professional. Awesome app altogether

Terrific App for Birders
Downloaded Birda around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general. That said, I also believe Birda is a fantastic app for birders of all experience levels. Great community!

Birding and wellbeing app
Birda is an excellent platform to share your love of Birding and is a great tool of encouragement for a Birding Beginner like me. Birda has a very kind and supportive community of Birding enthusiasts. For me BIRDA is not only a BIRDING but also a WELLBEING App.

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.

Fantastic App
This is a really lovely app, for everyone interested in birds - from newbies to old hands. There is a very friendly feel to the community and you will genuinely learn a lot as you record your sightings and photos. There are lots of badges and competitions to keep you engaged, and a host of really useful features.

My favourite app
As a young birdwatcher who was always keen to be apart of a community but never seemed to find one, my problem was solved downloading this!!! Everyone is so friendly and just as excited to see birds as me 😁

Really great app
It’s easy to use and it’s fun to log the birds you notice on a walk or just in your garden. There’s a option to record the birds you see in a session which is really nice. Good excuse to stop for a while and just watch birds. I am also enjoying the information part where you can find out fact about birds from all over the world.
