About

🐦 Log 30 species

📍 Anywhere

Identify 30 bird species this August—from the wild outdoors to your own backyard. Let the birding begin!

This month's bird is the Indigo Bunting, the male has vibrant blue feathers which are not truly blue but appear so due to the way light reflects off them. Interestingly, this stunning coloration only appears during the breeding season; at other times, the male's feathers are a more subdued brown. Additionally, Indigo Buntings are skilled celestial navigators, using the night sky to guide their nocturnal migrations.

This challenge is for anyone with a Birda account. This challenge is for tickable species only. You can read more about tickable species here.

This challenge starts and ends based on the GMT time zone. All individual species logged globally will count towards this challenge and will be included in any leaderboard placement. All sightings must be logged before midnight on the day the challenge ends.

Be honest with yourself and other birders, but above all, respectful of them and any other outdoor users, everywhere – especially online. If you didn’t see it (or hear it), please don’t put it on Birda.

September Challenge 2024

01 - 30 Sep, 2024
🐦 Log 30 species 📍 Anywhere Take on this month's challenge to identify 30 bird species. Whether you're exploring the wild outdoors, local parks, or your own backyard, log your sightings in the app and connect with a community of fellow bird enthusiasts. Let the birding adventure begin! This month's bird is the Grey Phalarope, also known as the Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius). It is a remarkable bird with reversed gender roles, where females are more colorful and lead courtship. These birds are strong fliers, migrating long distances from their Arctic breeding grounds to the open ocean, where they live pelagically during the non-breeding season. Their plumage changes from striking red in the breeding season to grey and white in winter, reflecting their dual names.

What Our Birders Say

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.

Simply fantastic
I love this app, it puts so much fun into recording the birds I’ve seen and heard while I’m out and about. The interface is user-friendly and suitable for all ages. It’s great to collect badges and to review my “lists”.

Sense of Community
A great app, which is continually being improved. What really comes through is the passion of those behind the app. The sense of community is brilliant, so much help and support provided to new and/or in experienced birders.

Clean and easy to use
Really enjoying this app, it's clean and easy to use. I love the ease of being able to add those one-off birds without starting a whole checklist. I also like the social aspect, like the parts of my Facebook I like, without the ads and junk, just birds. Can't wait to see it become more populated.
