Lowland Tiny Greenbul

Phyllastrephus debilis

The Lowland Tiny Greenbul, scientifically known as Phyllastrephus debilis, is a diminutive and charming songbird that graces the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. This feathered creature is adorned with a subtle yet enchanting plumage that blends harmoniously with the verdant hues of its natural environment.

Identification Tips

To identify this elusive bird, one must look for its modest size and the yellow streaks that grace its plumage. Observers should note the bird's overall greenish coloration, which serves as a splendid camouflage amidst the foliage.

Habitat

The Lowland Tiny Greenbul is a denizen of the subtropical and tropical realms, favoring the moist lowland forests and shrublands. These habitats provide the bird with the necessary cover and resources for its survival.

Distribution

This species is a resident of eastern Africa, where it flits through the forest canopies from southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania, stretching down to eastern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique.

Subspecies

There are two recognized subspecies of the Lowland Tiny Greenbul. The Rabai Yellow-streaked Bulbul (P. d. rabai) is found in southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania, while the North Nyasa Yellow-streaked Bulbul (P. d. debilis), also known as the Smaller Yellow-streaked Bulbul, inhabits the region from southeastern Tanzania to eastern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique.

Conservation Status

The IUCN Red List has classified the Lowland Tiny Greenbul as Least Concern, indicating that, for now, this species does not face any imminent threats to its survival. However, continuous monitoring is essential to ensure that this status remains stable.

Terrific App for Birders
Downloaded Birda around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general. That said, I also believe Birda is a fantastic app for birders of all experience levels. Great community!

A Friendly Place
I love using the bird app, I have a pretty good knowledge of birds. But I do have some gaps in it, so it’s nice to have a safe space to check on a sighting to confirm the species. It’s really enjoyable and I love the badges you can collect. It’s like a real life Pokémon go.
