White-rumped Robin

Peneothello bimaculata

The White-rumped Robin, scientifically known as Peneothello bimaculata, is a diminutive songbird with a striking contrast in its plumage. Adults typically measure between 13 to 14 centimeters in length, cloaked predominantly in black feathers. A distinctive white rump and upper tail coverts set this bird apart, along with white patches adorning the sides of its breast. The abdomen presents a white hue in the nominate subspecies, while in the subspecies vicarius, it is black with white mottling. Females bear a close resemblance to males but are discernible by the brown tinges in their black feathers. Both sexes have black bills and feet, and their eyes are a deep, dark brown.

Identification Tips

When attempting to identify the White-rumped Robin, look for the characteristic white rump and upper tail coverts, which are particularly noticeable when the bird is in flight. The white patches on the sides of the breast are also key identification markers. The subspecies can be differentiated by the color of the abdomen, with the nominate subspecies displaying a white abdomen and the subspecies vicarius showing a black abdomen with white.

Habitat

This species is indigenous to the lush rainforests of New Guinea, where it can be found from the lowland regions to the montane forests. It thrives at altitudes ranging from 300 to 1,700 meters above sea level.

Distribution

The White-rumped Robin is endemic to New Guinea, with the nominate subspecies residing along the southern side of the main mountain range and the subspecies vicarius inhabiting the Huon Peninsula and Adelbert Range.

Behaviour

In the dense rainforest environment, the White-rumped Robin is typically observed in pairs. It is a ground-dwelling bird, often seen foraging in the understory or directly on the forest floor.

Diet and Feeding

This bird is insectivorous, meaning its diet consists primarily of insects which it actively hunts within its rainforest habitat.

Conservation status

The White-rumped Robin is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, indicating that, at present, there are no immediate threats to its population numbers that would warrant a higher level of concern.

Awesome Birding Community
I absolutely love the community aspect of this app. The app is so user friendly and has fun interactive challenges to get you out birding. I’ve tried others but since I’ve started using Birda I’ve not gone back!

Just what birding needs
We need more fun in birding, for years it has had a reputation for being up tight and stuffy and only perused by retirees and anoraks. Birda helps change that perception and firmly brings birding into the 21st century! Fun, interactive while still contributing to science and conservation. If you aren’t on it, why not??

The best bird logging app
Birda is honestly the best bird logging app I have seen. I love all the features it has from being able to do a session and log all the birds you see in one sitting, to being able to connect with other birders from all over the globe!

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.
