Buff-spotted Flufftail

Sarothrura elegans

The Buff-spotted flufftail, known scientifically as Sarothrura elegans, is a diminutive and elusive bird, a member of the Sarothruridae family. It is adorned with a subtle yet intricate plumage that blends seamlessly into its forested abode.

Identification Tips

This species can be identified by its buff spots, which are set against a backdrop of rich browns and soft whites, creating a camouflage that is both effective and beautiful. The flufftail's size and coloration may vary, but its distinctive spots remain a constant marker.

Habitat

The Buff-spotted flufftail thrives in forested areas, where the dappled light and dense undergrowth provide both shelter and foraging grounds.

Distribution

This bird has a wide range across the African continent, being found in countries such as Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, and many others, down to South Africa. Its presence is a testament to the adaptability and resilience of the species.

Behaviour

The flufftail leads a secretive life, often hidden away from prying eyes. Its behavior is a dance of shadows and whispers in the dense forest habitat it prefers.

Diet and Feeding

With a semi-omnivorous diet, the Buff-spotted flufftail partakes in a variety of invertebrates as well as grass and tree seeds. These seeds are not just sustenance but also serve a functional purpose, aiding in the grinding of other foods within its digestive system.

Conservation status

Currently, the Buff-spotted flufftail is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN. Its population remains steady, a beacon of hope for conservationists and bird enthusiasts alike.

A Friendly Place
I love using the bird app, I have a pretty good knowledge of birds. But I do have some gaps in it, so it’s nice to have a safe space to check on a sighting to confirm the species. It’s really enjoyable and I love the badges you can collect. It’s like a real life PokΓ©mon go.

Easy to use and accurate
Love this app. It is easy to use and accurate, Their backup communication is really good. I noted a missing species. All through the process, I was kept informed about the progress in correcting the information. I now have the corrected, updated version. 😁 Thanks!

Friendly and helps to identify birds
Great birding app, good for logging your sightings, also has nice species guide. I'm enjoying the social aspect more than I expected, everyone seems friendly and helps to identify unknown birds. Good mix of newbies and experienced users.

Clean and easy to use
Really enjoying this app, it's clean and easy to use. I love the ease of being able to add those one-off birds without starting a whole checklist. I also like the social aspect, like the parts of my Facebook I like, without the ads and junk, just birds. Can't wait to see it become more populated.

Terrific App for Birders
Downloaded Birda around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general. That said, I also believe Birda is a fantastic app for birders of all experience levels. Great community!
