Desert Cisticola

Cisticola aridulus

The desert cisticola, known scientifically as Cisticola aridulus, is a charming bird belonging to the Cisticolidae family. This small, inconspicuous avian species graces the skies of sub-Saharan Africa with its presence.

Identification Tips

When attempting to identify the desert cisticola, one should look for its modest plumage which blends seamlessly into the arid landscapes it inhabits. As with many of its relatives in the Cisticolidae family, it may present a challenge to the untrained eye.

Habitat

The desert cisticola is aptly named, as it thrives in dry, open environments. It is a bird of the savannas and grasslands, where it can be seen flitting about, well-adapted to the sparse vegetation of its chosen habitat.

Distribution

This species is widespread throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. However, it is notably absent from the central and coastal western regions of the continent, preferring the drier areas that align with its name.

Conservation Status

The IUCN Red List has classified the desert cisticola as Least Concern. This status indicates that, for now, the species does not face any immediate threat of extinction and is relatively stable within its environment.

In the spirit of conservation, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the desert cisticola continues to flourish, unthreatened by the specter of habitat loss or other man-made perils.

A Friendly Place
I love using the bird app, I have a pretty good knowledge of birds. But I do have some gaps in it, so it’s nice to have a safe space to check on a sighting to confirm the species. It’s really enjoyable and I love the badges you can collect. It’s like a real life Pokémon go.

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.
