Grey Tit

Melaniparus afer

The grey tit, known scientifically as Melaniparus afer, is a charming bird belonging to the Paridae family. This avian species exhibits a subtle yet attractive plumage predominantly in shades of grey.

Identification Tips

When attempting to identify the grey tit, one should look for its distinctive grey coloration. The bird's upper parts are cloaked in a soft grey, while the underparts may present a lighter shade. Its black-breasted appearance, as noted by early naturalists, is a key characteristic to observe.

Habitat

The grey tit is quite adaptable and can be found in a variety of environments. Its natural habitats include the subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, as well as areas with Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation.

Distribution

This species has a geographical range that includes the southern reaches of the African continent. Specifically, the grey tit can be found in the countries of Lesotho and South Africa, with its presence also noted in Namibia.

Conservation status

The IUCN Red List categorizes the grey tit as Least Concern, indicating that, at present, there are no immediate threats to its population numbers that would warrant a higher level of concern.

A Friendly Place
I love using the bird app, I have a pretty good knowledge of birds. But I do have some gaps in it, so it’s nice to have a safe space to check on a sighting to confirm the species. It’s really enjoyable and I love the badges you can collect. It’s like a real life Pokémon go.

Learning Birding with Birda
I’m relatively new to birding as a hobby, and Birda is a great way to keep track off all the species I see. I’m still working on my ID skills, but the app is great for figuring out potential species, and the online community is so friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend Birda to both early and serious birders! 🐦
