Böhm's Bee-eater

Merops boehmi

The Böhm's bee-eater, known scientifically as Merops boehmi, is a vibrant member of the Meropidae family. This avian species is adorned with a striking plumage that is characteristic of the bee-eater family.

Identification Tips

When observing Böhm's bee-eaters, look for their distinctive coloration and sleek body shape. They possess the typical bee-eater form, with a slender body and a long, pointed bill that is well-suited for their insectivorous diet.

Habitat

These birds are found in a variety of habitats within their range, often frequenting areas where they can forage for their preferred prey.

Distribution

Böhm's bee-eaters grace the skies of several African countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia. Their presence in these regions adds a dash of color and life to the local ecosystems.

Behaviour

As with other bee-eaters, this species exhibits fascinating behaviors, particularly in their hunting techniques and social interactions.

Conservation status

Fortunately, the Böhm's bee-eater is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, indicating that, for now, their populations are stable and they are not facing immediate threats to their survival.

The name of this enchanting bird pays homage to the German zoologist Richard Böhm, a testament to his contributions to the field of zoology.

Great app for learning Birds
I’ve been using the app for a couple of months and love it....Someone said it’s like a real life Pokémon Go for birds. They’re not far off! It’s something that the family can do that gets you out and about. Well worth downloading no matter your age.

A Friendly Place
I love using the bird app, I have a pretty good knowledge of birds. But I do have some gaps in it, so it’s nice to have a safe space to check on a sighting to confirm the species. It’s really enjoyable and I love the badges you can collect. It’s like a real life Pokémon go.
