Azure Dollarbird

Eurystomus azureus

The Azure Dollarbird, also known as the Azure Roller, Purple Dollarbird, or Purple Roller, is a captivating species belonging to the Coraciidae family. This bird is distinguished by its vibrant plumage and is endemic to North Maluku in Indonesia.

Identification Tips

When observing the Azure Dollarbird, look for its striking coloration which includes shades of azure and purple. It is a member of the roller family, which is known for their robust bodies and strong, direct flight.

Habitat

The natural habitats of the Azure Dollarbird are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and plantations. These environments provide the necessary conditions for the bird to thrive.

Distribution

This species is found exclusively in North Maluku, Indonesia, where it is a native bird.

Behaviour

The Azure Dollarbird exhibits typical roller behavior, which includes powerful and agile flight. It is important to note that this bird is experiencing a decline in population, primarily due to habitat loss.

Conservation status

Previously classified as Vulnerable due to rapid population decline, the Azure Dollarbird's status has been updated to Near Threatened as of 2007. This change reflects a more optimistic view of its population numbers, which are still declining but not as rapidly as once feared. The species is currently under the watchful eye of conservationists who are monitoring its status in the wild.

Great app for learning Birds
I’ve been using the app for a couple of months and love it....Someone said it’s like a real life Pokémon Go for birds. They’re not far off! It’s something that the family can do that gets you out and about. Well worth downloading no matter your age.

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.
