Whiteheads

Mohoua is a genus of small birds comprising three species endemic to New Zealand, named after the Māori word for one of its members, the yellowhead. Originally classified in the whistler family, Pachycephalidae, a 2013 study suggested they merited their own family, Mohouidae, which was supported by genetic research in 2019 linking them closely to the Neosittidae family of sittellas. These birds exhibit sexual dimorphism, with larger males, and are known for their gregarious nature, especially outside the breeding season, when they often forage in mixed-species groups and can form the nucleus of such flocks. Mohoua species practice cooperative breeding, particularly in whiteheads and yellowheads. They are the exclusive host species for the long-tailed cuckoo's brood parasitism. The genus, introduced by René Lesson in 1837 with the yellowhead as the type species, includes the whitehead (Mohoua albicilla) on the North Island, the pipipi or New Zealand brown creeper (Mohoua novaeseelandiae) on the South Island, and the yellowhead (Mohoua ochrocephala) also found on the South Island.

What Our Birders Say

Really great app
It’s easy to use and it’s fun to log the birds you notice on a walk or just in your garden. There’s a option to record the birds you see in a session which is really nice. Good excuse to stop for a while and just watch birds. I am also enjoying the information part where you can find out fact about birds from all over the world.

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.

Friendly and helps to identify birds
Great birding app, good for logging your sightings, also has nice species guide. I'm enjoying the social aspect more than I expected, everyone seems friendly and helps to identify unknown birds. Good mix of newbies and experienced users.

Great app for learning Birds
I’ve been using the app for a couple of months and love it....Someone said it’s like a real life Pokémon Go for birds. They’re not far off! It’s something that the family can do that gets you out and about. Well worth downloading no matter your age.

Terrific App for Birders
Downloaded Birda around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general. That said, I also believe Birda is a fantastic app for birders of all experience levels. Great community!

Just what birding needs
We need more fun in birding, for years it has had a reputation for being up tight and stuffy and only perused by retirees and anoraks. Birda helps change that perception and firmly brings birding into the 21st century! Fun, interactive while still contributing to science and conservation. If you aren’t on it, why not??
