Spindalises

The Spindalis is a unique genus of non-migratory birds, comprising four species found primarily in the West Indies, with some populations extending to Cozumel Island and southeast Florida. Formerly categorized as oddities in the tanager family, the Spindalis species are now recognized as a distinct family, Spindalidae, and are considered closely related to the Puerto Rican tanager. The males showcase vivid plumage, in contrast to the females’ more subdued tones. These birds build cup-shaped nests and include the Hispaniolan spindalis found in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the Jamaican spindalis on Jamaica, the Puerto Rican spindalis in Puerto Rico, and the western spindalis which inhabits parts of Florida and the western Caribbean. Once viewed as a single species with numerous subspecies, significant morphological and vocal distinctions have prompted the reclassification of some subspecies into separate species, reflecting a more nuanced understanding of their diversity.

What Our Birders Say

Great app
I use this app all the time as it’s quick and easy to log individual sightings or whole birding sessions. It’s an excellent way to meet new people and the forum is full of really friendly people. The challenges are a great way to get involved and learn more about birds. Cannot recommend it enough!

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.

Terrific App for Birders
Downloaded Birda around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general. That said, I also believe Birda is a fantastic app for birders of all experience levels. Great community!

Sense of Community
A great app, which is continually being improved. What really comes through is the passion of those behind the app. The sense of community is brilliant, so much help and support provided to new and/or in experienced birders.

A Friendly Place
I love using the bird app, I have a pretty good knowledge of birds. But I do have some gaps in it, so it’s nice to have a safe space to check on a sighting to confirm the species. It’s really enjoyable and I love the badges you can collect. It’s like a real life Pokémon go.

Just what birding needs
We need more fun in birding, for years it has had a reputation for being up tight and stuffy and only perused by retirees and anoraks. Birda helps change that perception and firmly brings birding into the 21st century! Fun, interactive while still contributing to science and conservation. If you aren’t on it, why not??

Great app for beginner twitchers
I’ve had a passion of photographing birds for a long time now but have only just gotten into proper birdwatching, and this app is brilliant for those just getting started. There is a great sense of community among users and the app is very easy to use and professional. Awesome app altogether
