Mitrospingid Tanagers

The family Mitrospingidae, established in 2013 and recognized by the American Ornithological Society in 2017 and the International Ornithological Committee, encompasses a small group of passerine birds previously classified under the Thraupidae. These birds are native to South and southern Central America and include three genera: Mitrospingus, which has the Dusky-faced tanager (M. cassinii) and Olive-backed tanager (M. oleagineus); Orthogonys, with the Olive-green tanager (O. chloricterus); and Lamprospiza, which includes the Red-billed pied tanager (L. melanoleuca). There are, in total, four species within this family.

Learning Birding with Birda

I’m relatively new to birding as a hobby, and Birda is a great way to keep track off all the species I see. I’m still working on my ID skills, but the app is great for figuring out potential species, and the online community is so friendly and helpful. Downloaded Birda around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general.
