Mitrospingid Tanagers

The family Mitrospingidae, established in 2013 and recognized by the American Ornithological Society in 2017 and the International Ornithological Committee, encompasses a small group of passerine birds previously classified under the Thraupidae. These birds are native to South and southern Central America and include three genera: Mitrospingus, which has the Dusky-faced tanager (M. cassinii) and Olive-backed tanager (M. oleagineus); Orthogonys, with the Olive-green tanager (O. chloricterus); and Lamprospiza, which includes the Red-billed pied tanager (L. melanoleuca). There are, in total, four species within this family.

Learning Birding with Birda

I’m relatively new to birding as a hobby, and Birda is a great way to keep track off all the species I see. I use this app all the time as it’s quick and easy to log individual sightings or whole birding sessions. It’s an excellent way to meet new people and the forum is full of really friendly people. The challenges are a great way to get involved and learn more about birds. Cannot recommend it enough!
