Quailfinch

Ortygospiza atricollis

The quailfinch, Ortygospiza atricollis, is a diminutive and charming member of the estrildid finch family. These birds are characterized by their short, thick, red bills and a preference for life on the ground, reminiscent of larks with their specialized feet and claws.

Identification Tips

When observing quailfinches, look for their gregarious nature and distinctive red bills. The plumage may vary among subspecies, with the African quailfinch, Black-faced quailfinch, and Black-chinned quailfinch each presenting subtle differences in throat and chin coloration.

Habitat

Quailfinches are found in open grasslands across Africa, where they forage and live most of their lives on the terra firma.

Distribution

These birds are widespread across the African continent, thriving in suitable grassland habitats.

Behaviour

Quailfinches are sociable creatures, often seen in flocks. They scurry about with agility, thanks to their lark-like adaptations.

Diet and Feeding

These birds are primarily seed-eaters, using their robust bills to crack open seeds found within their grassland homes.
