Hume's Wheatear

Oenanthe albonigra

The Hume's wheatear, known scientifically as Oenanthe albonigra, is a striking black-and-white bird that graces the rocky landscapes of the Old World. This member of the Muscicapidae family, named after the British naturalist Allan Octavian Hume, presents a visual spectacle with its contrasting plumage.

Identification Tips

When observing Hume's wheatear, look for its distinctive black and white coloration. The bird's appearance is marked by a sharp contrast between the dark hues of its upper parts and the pristine white of its underparts, making it a relatively straightforward species to identify in its natural habitat.

Habitat

This species is typically found in arid, rocky slopes, where it can blend into the stony environment. The rugged terrain of its habitat provides both shelter and a vantage point for spotting insects.

Distribution

Hume's wheatear has a geographical range that extends across southern Afghanistan, Iran, the extreme northeast of Iraq, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. It is a bird well-adapted to the harsh conditions of these regions.

Behaviour

Observations of Hume's wheatear reveal a bird well-suited to its environment, adept at navigating the rocky slopes that it calls home. Its behavior is characteristic of a species that has mastered the art of survival in challenging landscapes.

Conservation status

The conservation status of Hume's wheatear is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. This suggests that, for now, the species is not at immediate risk of decline, allowing birdwatchers to enjoy its presence in the wild for the foreseeable future.

Learning Birding with Birda
I’m relatively new to birding as a hobby, and Birda is a great way to keep track off all the species I see. I’m still working on my ID skills, but the app is great for figuring out potential species, and the online community is so friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend Birda to both early and serious birders! 🐦

Great app for learning Birds
I’ve been using the app for a couple of months and love it....Someone said it’s like a real life Pokémon Go for birds. They’re not far off! It’s something that the family can do that gets you out and about. Well worth downloading no matter your age.

A great app
Enjoying it immensely and finding it useful too. Recording the different birds and counting them is showing me how the present climate is affecting them all. I've trebled the numbers by planting native hedging. A great app.
