The Cocos tyrannulet, scientifically known as Nesotriccus ridgwayi, is a diminutive avian species belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family, Tyrannidae. This petite bird, measuring a mere 13 centimeters in length, is cloaked in a subtle grey plumage and is distinguished by its elongated bill.
This species is a unique denizen of Cocos Island, situated off the coast of Costa Rica. The Cocos tyrannulet thrives in a variety of lush environments on the island, including subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, swamps, montane forests, and moist shrublands.
The Cocos tyrannulet is currently classified as Vulnerable. Its precarious status is attributed to the perils posed by invasive species, such as rats and feral cats that prey upon it, and pigs that ravage its habitat through their foraging activities. Although there is no concrete evidence of a population decline at present, the bird's extremely limited range is a cause for concern.
