Olive Woodpecker

Dendropicos griseocephalus

The Olive Woodpecker, known scientifically as Dendropicos griseocephalus, is a member of the woodpecker family Picidae. This avian species is adorned with a plumage that blends seamlessly into the foliage, with its namesake olive hue dominating its feathering.

Identification Tips

When endeavoring to identify this bird, one should note its grey head, which is a defining characteristic. The Olive Woodpecker's appearance is further distinguished by its robust body, strong bill, and zygodactyl feet, which are typical of woodpeckers, allowing them to cling to tree trunks with ease.

Habitat

The Olive Woodpecker is a denizen of wooded and forested realms, where it can be found at altitudes ranging from 450 to 3,700 meters above sea level. These birds are adept at navigating the vertical world of tree trunks and branches.

Distribution

This species has a broad range across central, east, and southern Africa. It graces the landscapes from the Ruwenzori Mountains to the Western Cape, with sightings reported in countries such as Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Behaviour

Observations of the Olive Woodpecker reveal a bird that is as industrious as it is fascinating, engaging in the typical woodpecker behavior of tapping and drilling into wood to find sustenance.

Similar Species

In the absence of specific information, one can surmise that there may be other woodpecker species within its range that the Olive Woodpecker could be confused with, necessitating careful observation for accurate identification.

Diet and Feeding

While the specifics of the Olive Woodpecker's diet are not enumerated, it is reasonable to assume that it includes a variety of insects and grubs, which it skillfully extracts from beneath the bark of trees.

Conservation status

The Olive Woodpecker is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, indicating that, for now, this species does not face immediate threats to its survival.

Makes you want to spot birds more
I think this app is fun. It makes you want to spot birds more so I guess in a way it encourages you to get out and about instead of sitting in front of the TV.
