Danijel Turnšek has seen a Tengmalm's Owl
Sighting
Finally, I captured the moment! In March 2021, a little over three years since I first glimpsed our most charming owl, I disn't managed to take a photo of it. Back then, at dawn, I only had a few fleeting seconds to listen and watch it before it vanished into the forest. But from that day on, I set a goal: I would return to this spot, determined to photograph it—little did I know the journey would be so challenging.
Over the past few years, my friend Davorin and I have been unwavering in our pursuit, reassuring ourselves that one day it would show itself again. Sure, we could have hired a guide and secured the perfect shot right away, but where’s the thrill in that?
After a few months' break, we made one last attempt last weekend, fully prepared to “throw in the towel”—or rather, to “put down the camera.” We headed out in the early morning darkness, guided only by moonlight through the coniferous forest, our expectations low. We quietly approached the owl’s territory, and then, we heard it—the alarm call of a boreal owl, echoing from a spruce somewhere above us. The darkness concealed it, but our adrenaline surged as we waited, eyes straining for the first light of dawn.
Hours passed in silence, and once again, we found ourselves bracing for another letdown. Then, just as we started to lose hope, I heard that familiar call, deeper in the forest. Following the sound, our hearts racing, we waited, silence stretching around us. And then, like a flash, there it was—a boreal owl swooped onto a branch not far away!
In that moment, our dream was fulfilled. We finally had our sighting, our photo, our memory. The lesson? Never give up, and never stop dreaming, because sometimes, dreams do come true—whether they’re big or small.
So go ahead, dare to dream.
