Megapodes

Megapodes, a distinctive group of medium to large-sized terrestrial birds known for their large feet and heavy legs, are a common spectacle in the Australasian region, spanning across Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia's eastern islands, and the western Pacific's islands. These chicken-like birds, with their small heads, short beaks, powerful legs, and rounded wings, exhibit varying flying abilities. Notably, the megapodes are renowned for their unique reproduction method, as they do not use body warmth to incubate their eggs. Instead, they construct extensive mounds of decaying plant material or utilize natural heat sources like geothermal vents or sun-warmed sands to maintain egg temperature. With eggs rich in yolk, megapode chicks emerge highly developed, capable of running, foraging, and even flying shortly after hatching. This level of independence at birth is termed superprecociality, a trait that differentiates them from most other birds. While megapodes generally are solitary, the way these birds recognize their species' members at hatching remains a curiosity, as they lack parental instruction and seem to rely on instinctive visual cues. The more than 20 species of megapodes are classified within seven genera, characterized by clear physical forms, despite uncertainties in their evolutionary connections.

Makes you want to spot birds more
I think this app is fun. It makes you want to spot birds more so I guess in a way it encourages you to get out and about instead of sitting in front of the TV.

Learning Birding with Birda
I’m relatively new to birding as a hobby, and Birda is a great way to keep track off all the species I see. I’m still working on my ID skills, but the app is great for figuring out potential species, and the online community is so friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend Birda to both early and serious birders! 🐦

Great app for learning Birds
I’ve been using the app for a couple of months and love it....Someone said it’s like a real life Pokémon Go for birds. They’re not far off! It’s something that the family can do that gets you out and about. Well worth downloading no matter your age.
