Miombo Blue-eared Starling

Lamprotornis elisabeth

The Miombo blue-eared starling, scientifically known as Lamprotornis elisabeth, is a resplendent member of the starling family, Sturnidae. It is also referred to as the southern blue-eared glossy-starling, a name that hints at its iridescent plumage.

Identification Tips

This species exhibits a striking glossy sheen, with the males typically displaying more vibrant colors than the females. The characteristic blue patch around the ear coverts is a distinctive feature that aids in its identification.

Habitat

The Miombo blue-eared starling is a denizen of the woodlands, favoring the Miombo woodland ecosystem, which provides it with ample foraging opportunities and nesting sites.

Distribution

The bird's range extends across several African countries, including Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Conservation status

The Miombo blue-eared starling is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, indicating that, for now, it is not at immediate risk of decline across its broad range.

Just what birding needs
We need more fun in birding, for years it has had a reputation for being up tight and stuffy and only perused by retirees and anoraks. Birda helps change that perception and firmly brings birding into the 21st century! Fun, interactive while still contributing to science and conservation. If you aren’t on it, why not??

Clean and easy to use
Really enjoying this app, it's clean and easy to use. I love the ease of being able to add those one-off birds without starting a whole checklist. I also like the social aspect, like the parts of my Facebook I like, without the ads and junk, just birds. Can't wait to see it become more populated.

Terrific App for Birders
Downloaded Birda around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general. That said, I also believe Birda is a fantastic app for birders of all experience levels. Great community!

For a while I’ve been trying to find an app to easily record bird lists and day out and struggled to find one that I like. Birda is great for this, straightforward and a great community!
